Google says…

Fruška gora is a mountain in northern Syrmia, its larger part is located in Voivodina, whereas the western slopes are in Vukovar-Srijem county. It is about 75 kilometres long, from 12 to 15 km wide and has the area of 255 square kilometres. The river Danube flows on the north and the east, and the highest peak – Crveni Čot with 539 metres altitude of this attractive green oasis is on the side of Voivodina.

Excursion to Liska above Ilok
Along the state border, on the western side of Fruška gora, above Ilok, is the highest peak of Vukovar-Srijem county. Highlanders might find it funny but Syrmians are extremely proud of Liska and its 297 metres of altitude. From there you have the view towards the south to the western Syrmia and the villages Erdevik, Bingula, Kukujevci, Martinci and Kuzmin, and if there is a good visibility you can see in the distance the rivers Sava with the mouth of Bosut and Drina, and the peaks of mountain Cer in the north-western Serbia, but also Majevica and Semberija in the north-east of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The other sides of the world are covered with beautiful forests, but as you climb to the top from the northern side through the vineyards, you will enjoy the view to Ilok, Danube and Voivodina plain all the way to Novi SAD. It is best to take a local guide on the mountain trail that starts on the road Ilok-Šid. Before the ascent of the road – towards the most famous Ilok vineyard Principovac with the summer house Odescalchi – there is brown tourist sign for the path Liska. From the road up until the top through picturesque vineyards and forests it will take you more than two hours of pure pleasure. Believe me, it is worth it.

Fruška gora

Quite a unique marathon on Voivodina side
Fruška gora in Serbia received the status of a national park in 1960, therefore it is considered one of the oldest national parks on the other side of the border. Almost 90 percent of Fruška gora is taken by the forest. Those who like to explore the nature, especially runners and climbers, adore this destination as among numerous footpaths there is one “beaten track” where the traditional marathon Fruška gora is held, one of the oldest trails in Europe (the next is held on April 25 and 26, 2020) The first Fruška gora marathon was held in 1978, it lasted for two days, and amazing 18 thousand people took part in it! The trail of the said marathon is 111 kilometres long and it is actually the longest footpath in Fruška gora, it passes through many villages, and you do not have to worry about getting lost. If you stick to the marks on trees – white circle with a heart -you will not get lost. Besides, the paths are circular and it is possible to choose northern of southern side of each path.

Monasteries and lakes
Within footpaths, forests and valleys, there are 16 orthodox monasteries, almost all of them were built in the 16th century (there used to be 35 of them, but they were destroyed during war destructions). They are real monuments of culture and art and centres of literacy, literal creation and art in this region. There are also 14 accumulation lakes worth seeing, which were built in the period from 1965 to 1986 to serve irrigation of agricultural areas, and of course, as flood defence. There was a need for protection of, among other things, noble kinds of wines which make todays Riesling, Traminer, Frankovka, Portuguese, and of course, aromatic Bermet.  For its high-quality wine kinds, the wines of Fruška gora from bith sides of the border, are often compared with the biggest and the most famous – the French.

Four huts and a beach
Fruška gora is full of excursion sites with tables and benches for a picnic (Čortanovačka šuma, Stražilovo, Hopovo, Glavica, Popovica, Lipovača…, the list is long), but the most important thing is to know that you will not be left to yourselves, because the employees of the Information centre of the National park Fruška gora are there for you at any time, ready to help with information or advice what you should see, or how to spend your time actively. They will tell you where you can ride a horse, where to camp if you decided to stay for a couple of days and where is the beach in the heart of the mountain. Namely, the lake Borkovac, one of the 16 artificial lakes in Fruška gora, is specific because there is the so-called “aqua camp” with four huts and a beach. After having a swim in the lake, not far from it you can find restaurants, bars, hotels as well as eco-friendly work out equipment – up to the measure of a modern lifestyle.

The level of ecological awareness is really high, so, upon a previous arrangement with the Eco centre in Sremski Karlovci you can participate in various “recycle” creative workshops, orientation in nature, adventurous walk with eco-guides and already mentioned creation of perfumes with materials you find in nature.

To the national park by bus, train or car
It does not hurt to mention that there are a few bus lines from Novi Sad that will take you to the national park Fruška gora, so you do not have to worry about where to park your car. If you decide to head to this adventure by car, even though the roads are well connected, at some points you will have to park your car at the beginning of a footpath. You can also reach the national park Fruška gora by train from Sremski Karlovci, or from Belgrade or Novi Sad.
