Do you know which wine of continental Croatia received the highest prize in London? Do you know which vineyard offers the best price-quality ratio? Do you know where to go for your next wine journey?

Buhač Graševina Šuma 2019, a selective harvest of berries at this year’s Decanter, has won a silver medal and, with its 93 points, it is one of the two best wines of continental Croatia. This winery has received another two prizes from London: silver for the excellent Graševina Liska of 2020 and bronze for the powerful Merlot Liska of 2017.

Buhač medals are no surprise for wine lovers and connoisseurs of the Croatian wine scene. In the cellars in Ilok, there is a great wine story hiding, equally intriguing and seducing by both its white and red wines, while the price-quality ratio is the best in all of Croatia. Just like in all the wineries of the Srijem vineyards.

This has been a wine region from time immemorial! Wine is love and passion here and when work is thus done, success is guaranteed. Only this year, Ilok got ten Decanter prizes – three for Buhač, the bronze medals for Graševina 2020 of the Dragun winery and for Chardonnay 2020, Pinot Blanc 2020, Rose Frankovka 2020, Graševina 2020 of the Ilok cellars and silver for Éclat Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 of the Vinolog winery. There would be even more of them had the selfless Ilok winemakers sent more samples for evaluation.

A Proposal for Contemporary Passengers

There is no better recommendation for visiting a wine region than the Decanter awards. With its twenty wineries, Ilok is one of the most attractive wine destinations. The vineyards on the slopes of Fruška gora descend towards the Danube creating most beautiful landscapes.

You will be thrilled with its historic architecture – the Ilok walls, the renovated Odescalchi Castle that is today the Ilok City Museum, a recently opened Interpretation Centre, Ilok, Gate of Croatia in the beautiful Brnjaković Manor, a church and a monastery of St John of Capistrano, the Old Cellars from the 15th and 18th centuries, Ottoman monuments, i.e. ‘turbe’ and ‘hammam’ from the times of Suleiman the Magnificent, a visit to the country estate and the most famous vineyard position of Principovac in Srijem, all a true discovery for contemporary passengers. Ilok is a perfect choice to discover Srijem and Slavonia. You can do it by car, bike, boat or on pedestrian trails.

And, for the end of the day, there is the terrace of the Danube Hotel with the Michelin recommendation, the famous freshwater fish specialties and a glass of the superb Ilok wine with a view over the river. Have you already planned your next journey?
