of the navigation on excursion boats in Srijem and Slavonia
In the picturesque Nijemci, ‘catamaran’ is used as a term of endearment. It navigates on the peaceful Bosut and Spačva rivers in Srijem. St Catherine has been the most famous boat east of Zagreb for a long time but recently it got worthy competition so that from now on you can enjoy also the mystic Virovi in the heart of the Spačva forest. You will have a completely different experience on the Danube in Vukovar.
On the Danube

From Borovo to Vučedol, you can see almost all the sights in an hour comfortably placed and protected from rain and wind. Vukovar from a new perspective, from a panoramic boat easily sailing on the mighty Danube is to be recommended. On one side, there is the view of the baroque town, while on the other to the Vukovar Ada sandy island, a favourite bathing ground for the people of Vukovar in summer.
On Bosut and Spačva
The Bosut is a river without a source, wide, with a shallow bed, its flow overgrown in lush greenery. Choose: rowing in a canoe, riding on a solar boat or, even better, St Catherine. You start from the centre of Nijemci up to the well-known Sopotac excursion site where there is a Birdwatching Centre, further through Lipovac and Apševac on the Spačva river through the most beautiful Spačva forest, and back to Nijemci. In an hour or two, you will see more birds during the ride than in certain areas in several days and, if you are lucky, there could be wild boars, a deer or roe-deer swimming in the river and turning your excursion into a photo safari in Srijem.
At Virovi
There are similar sights also at Virovi in the Spačva forest not far from Otok. On one side of the embankment, there is the magnificent Lože, a special forest vegetation reserve with imposing samples of pedunculated oak up to 40 meters high. You can get to Lože on foot, on a three kilometre long educational trail starting not far from the newly opened Bioecological and Education Centre – Virovi with 15 rooms, a restaurant, multimedia hall and a wellness corner. Nevertheless, observing the Slavonian pedunculated oak forest from a new solar excursion boat is a special experience. Sailing for a little over an hour is a meditative experience. Pure zen.
