If this summer you are looking for something completely different,
if you are in search of new experience and thereby want
to charge your batteries, travel to the east of Croatia
where a pleasant surprise awaits you. Here is why

FIT&FUN

Through cosy villages, fields, forests, vineyards, towns, river embankments and slopes of Fruška gora (Fruška Mountain), Srijem and Slavonia are interwoven with cycling routes and pedestrian trails. There are the easy ones but also more challenging ones for passionate recreationists and sportsmen. Turn the pedals on the Srijem bike route that connects the southern and northeastern area of the Vukovar-Srijem County and follow the well-known EuroVelo 6 Danube cycle route. Healthy and fun at the same time.

ROLLING ON THE RIVER

Start with the Saint Catherine excursion boat from the centre of Nijemci and discover the beauty of the peaceful Bosut and the Spačva river or enjoy the peace and quiet of the largest pedunculate oak forest at the mystic Virovi near Otok. You may spot a deer, a roe-deer or a wild boar, while on the sky above you, you may see a white-tailed eagle. You did not expect a photo safari in Srijem?! If you prefer a vacation in towns, discover Vukovar from a panoramic boat sailing on the mighty Danube. For a new experience, it sometimes suffices to just change the perspective.

STRESS-FREE ZONE

Delicious traditional dishes, socialising with hospitable hosts with excellent fruit brandies, attractive family and agricultural estates and vacation houses, old and in the contemporary world completely forgotten crafts, exquisite workmanship and well-known sling, some wise proverb and time that seems to flow more slowly – the villages of Srijem and Slavonia are truly small stress free zones. A vacation at Principovac, a well-known Ilok vineyard position or visiting the villages on the Golden Threads Road in the Županja area will completely relax you.

TOTALLY COOL

Street art in Vukovar or a view from the Vukovar Water Tower, bird sculptures in Vinkovci  on the Bosut of the Israeli artist Dvina Merhav, holograms of the Noble laureate Lavoslav Ružička, ban Josip Šokčević and Nikola Iločki – a true discovery for travellers. Castles, museums, historic centres, centuries old monasteries and churches, promenades along rivers, walks and life in the area that has lasted for more than 8,000 years. Recommendation: the Vučedol Culture Museum, the Vukovar Municipal Museum in the Eltz Caste and the Ilok Town Museum in the Odescalchi Castle.

WINE&MORE

The Ilok wine road passes through the centre of this small mediaeval town and leads further towards the well-known vineyards on the slopes of Fruška gora. With fifteen wineries and their tasting rooms, they offer supreme wines among which Traminac takes a special place. Do not miss to visit the Old Cellars from the 15th and 18th centuries. Blend the Srijem wines with the delicious dishes of the traditional cuisine. They are offered in restaurants marked as ‘Tastes of Srijem and Slavonia’. Have you already tasted ‘fiš’ without bones in the Ilok Danube Hotel recommended by Michelin, a hot burger in the Vinkovci Lu restaurant or the most delicious ‘salenjaci’ of Aunt Luce in Gondola in Sotin?
